Salvia verbenacea is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches 50 cm in height. The velvety green leaves have serrated margins. It produces whorls of pink, white or blue flowers above the leaves. It blooms in spring and summer.

Wild sage is used in borders, rockeries, wild gardens and in pots for patios, balconies and terraces. It has medicinal properties and is also used as a condiment in cooking.

Salvia verbenacea prefers full sun exposure but can also grow in light shade.

The soil can be normal garden soil with 20% organic matter and 20% coarse sand; it is important that the drainage is excellent.

Water moderately, waiting for the substrate to have completely dried. Vervain sage has some resistance to drought when established.

Fertilize with a little compost in autumn.

Prune the wilted inflorescences to encourage the appearance of more flowers.

Salvia verbenacea is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to fungal attacks if there is excess humidity.

Wild clary propagates easily from seeds sown in spring.
