Care of the bulbous plant Zephyranthes carinata or Pink rain lily |
The genus Zephyranthes, family Amaryllidaceae, comprises 70 species of bulbous plants native to tropical and subtropical regions of the American continent. Some species are: Zephyranthes carinata, Zephyranthes candida, Zephyranthes atamasco, Zephyranthes americana, Zephyranthes rosea, Zephyranthes traubii. Common names: Rosepink zephyr lily, Pink rain lily. This species is native to the Mexico, Colombia and Central America. They are herbaceous bulbous plants that reach 30 cm (11.8") in height. They have light green leaves, narrow and ribbed in the center. The attractive flowers are pink with yellow parts. They bloom in summer. Pink rain lily is used to form groups of bulbous plants, in rockeries, on terraces and in pots for patios, terraces and balconies. Zephyranthes carinata needs full sun or semi-shade exposure. It does not resist frost. The soil can be a mixture of garden substrate with leaf mulch and coarse sand. The planting of the bulbs is done in spring. Water regularly but with little amount of water during spring and summer; reduce watering until leaves turn yellow; do not water in winter. Fertilize with compost or manure at the time of planting the bulbs. If the winter is very cold (with risk of frost) it's better to dig up the bulbs and store them in a dry and dark place. Zephyranthes carinata is a plant resistant to pests and diseases. Pink rain lily propagates by division of the bulb in late winter. |
