Care of the cactus Ferocactus x californicus or Barrel Cactus |
The genus Ferocactus, family Cactaceae, includes 30 species of cacti native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. Some species are: Ferocactus x californicus, Ferocactus hamatacanthus, Ferocactus emoryi, Ferocactus wislizenii, Ferocactus stainesii, Ferocactus schwarzii, Ferocactus robustus, Ferocactus peninsulae, Ferocactus latispinus, Ferocactus histrix, Ferocactus glaucescens, Ferocactus flavovirens, Ferocactus cylindraceus, Ferocactus alamosanus, Ferocactus viridescens, Ferocactus gracilis. Common name: Barrel Cactus. It is a natural hybrid between the species Ferocactus peninsulae and Ferocactus rectispinus. Ferocactus x californicus is a bluish or green cactus with a spherical body (it becomes cylindrical over time) that reaches 1 meter (3.28 feet) in height and does not usually produce suckers. It has 15-21 ribs and areoles with 8 radial spines and 1 longer, hooked central spine. It produces showy red or yellow flowers, 6 cm (2.36") in diameter. It blooms in summer. Barrel Cactus is a slow-growing cactus used in rockeries, cactus and succulent gardens, and in pots as indoor plants (next to a sunny window) and for patios and terraces. Ferocactus x californicus prefers full sun exposure and a warm, dry climate. It is best not to expose it to frost. The soil can be a commercial cactus substrate or a mixture of 50% leaf mold and 50% coarse sand. Repotting is done in early spring. Water moderately, waiting until the substrate is completely dry. Do not water in winter. This plant is very drought-resistant. Fertilize monthly with mineral fertilizer for cacti during spring. Pruning is not necessary. Barrel Cactus is resistant to common pests and diseases but sensitive to excess moisture and intense cold. Propagate from seeds sown in spring or fall in a sandy seedbed. |
