Care of the shrub Forsythia x intermedia or Border Forsythia |
The genus Forsythia, family Oleaceae, includes 11 species of shrubs native to eastern Asia and southeastern Europe. Some species are: Forsythia europaea, Forsythia viridissima, Forsythia koreana, Forsythia suspensa. Common names: Border Forsythia, Golden Bells. It's a hybrid between the species Forsythia viridissima and Forsythia suspensa. They are deciduous shrubs of wide bearing and branched from the base that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height. The leaves are oval or lanceolate, dark green in color and with a dentate margin. The showy flowers appear in clusters along the branches and sprout before the leaves. They bloom in early spring. These easy-to-grow plants are used in bushy groups, to form hedges and as isolated specimens. Border Forsythia is also used as a cut flower. Forsythia x intermedia prefers full sun exposure but also grows in semi-shade. It resists frost well. Golden Bells grows in any type of soil but prefers normal garden soil that is well drained with coarse sand and contains organic matter. The planting is done in autumn. Fertilize the soil with compost in winter and with mineral fertilizer in summer every 20 days. After flowering, prune the branches that have not flowered and the tips of those that have. Forsythia x intermedia is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Border Forsythia is propagated by semi-woody cuttings in summer or fall. |
