The genus Iris, family Iridaceae, comprises 300 species of rhizomatous and bulbous plants native to temperate regions of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Some species are: Iris xiphium, Iris unguicularis, Iris pseudacorus, Iris orientalis, Iris germanica, Iris foetidissima, Iris pumila, Iris aucheri, Iris lutescens. Common names: Spanish iris, Small bulbous-rooted. This species is native to Spain and Portugal. They are perennial plants with small bulbs that reach 60 cm (23.6") in height. They have linear and elongated leaves of light green color. The pretty flowers can be blue, purple, yellow or white, depending on the variety. They bloom in spring and summer. They are easy to grow plants that are used in mixed borders, in rockeries and in pots for terraces and balconies. They are also used as a cut flower. Iris xiphium needs full sun exposure and warm temperatures. They resist frosts down to -2 ºC (28.4 ºF). The ideal soil should be sandy, light and slightly calcareous. Dig up the bulbs and store them in a dry, dark place after the leaves have dried. Water abundantly during the growth period (never overwater). Reduce watering the rest of the year. Fertilize with manure before planting the bulbs. They are resistant plants to the usual pests and diseases. They propagate from seeds but it's a slow process; bulbs are best purchased at garden centers, nurseries, or plant stores. |
