The genus Ophiopogon, family Asparagaceae, comprises 60 species of perennial plants native to Asia. Some species are: Ophiopogon jaburan, Ophiopogon japonicus, Ophiopogon planiscapus, Ophiopogon intermedius. Common name: Lilyturf. They are rhizomatous plants with linear or lanceolate leaves. The small flowers appear in clusters, are bell-shaped and can be white, blue or lilac. They bloom in summer. Lilyturf is used as floor coverings, on rockeries and borders and in pots for balconies and terraces, as indoor and greenhouse plants. It's interesting for the flowers and also for the leaves. Ophiopogon jaburan needs a semi-shade exposure and annual average temperatures of 10-20 ºC (50-68 ºF). It does not resist frost. The soil must be well drained, rich in humus, fresh and of medium texture. Planting or transplanting is done in spring. Water moderately, waiting for the soil surface to dry; Do not allow the substrate to dry completely. Ophiopogon jaburan does not resist drought or excess water. Fertilize monthly with mineral fertilizer from late spring to mid-fall. Lilyturf is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Ophiopogon jaburan is propagated by seeds sown in spring in the nursery (without direct sun) or by division at the time of planting. |
