They are medium-sized cacti with a globose or cylindrical body that reach 40 cm (15.74") in height. They have 14-30 tuberculate ribs. The radial spines (up to 40) are 2 cm (0.78") long and white; the central spines (2 to 4) are longer and stiffer. The red flowers are funnel-shaped and appear at the apex of the plant. Matucana haynei needs full sun exposure and a winter temperature above 5 ºC (41 ºF). The soil can be a mixture of clay garden substrate, siliceous coarse sand and volcanic picon or a commercial cactus substrate with 20% coarse sand. Water moderately at the rate of once every 15-20 days in spring, every 8-10 days in summer and every 30 days in fall. In winter do not water. Borzicactus haynei does not need pruning or fertilizers. Matucana haynei is a sensitive plant to excess humidity. Cereus haynii propagates from seeds; it's a simple but slow process. |
