The genus Limonium, family Plumbaginaceae, includes about 300 species of annual and subshrub plants, mostly from the Mediterranean. Some species are: Limonium bourgeaui, Limonium sinuatum, Limonium vulgare, Limonium latifolium, Limonium algarvense, Limonium incanum, Limonium bellidifolium, Limonium bonduellii, Limonium caesium. Scientific synonym: Statice bourgaei. This species is native to the Canary Islands. They are perennial herbaceous plants with a short, woody stem and basal rosette leaves that reach 60 cm (23.6") in height and 50 cm (19.68") in diameter. The hairy sinuate-lobed leaves are green with reddish hues. Small, showy blue and white flowers appear in dense branched inflorescences above the leaves. They bloom in spring and summer. Statice bourgaei is used in rockeries, in borders, on dry and sunny slopes and as a cut flower to create floral decorations. Limonium bourgeaui needs full sun exposure and a warm climate. Withstands light and occasional frosts. Statice bourgaei grow in well-drained soils whether they are sandy, stony, poor or rocky. This fairly drought resistant plant needs moderate watering waiting for the substrate to dry out. Limonium bourgeaui does not need fertilizer. Prune dry leaves in late winter and faded flowers after blooming. Statice bourgaei is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases. Limonium bourgeaui is propagated from seeds sown in spring. |
