Care of the shrub Escallonia rubra or Red escallonia

The genus Escallonia, family Escalloniaceae, comprises 150 species of shrubs and trees native to the American continent. Some species are: Escallonia rubra, Escallonia illinita, Escallonia revoluta, Escallonia pulverulenta, Escallonia pendula, Escallonia resinosa, Escallonia serrata.

Common names: Red escallonia, Redclaws. This species is native to southern Chile.

They are evergreen shrubs with sarmentous stems that reach 2 meters (6.56 feet) in height. The leaves are oval in shape, serrated edges and dark green. The scented flowers are bell-shaped and can be white, pink, or red. It blooms from late winter to mid-summer.

Red escallonia is used to form groups, hedges, as isolated specimens and in large pots for patios and terraces. It's ideal for coastal gardens due to its resistance to salinity.

Escallonia rubra can grow in full sun or semi-shade exposure. It resists occasional and light frosts.

Redclaws can be grown in any type of soil that has good drainage; it's a plant prone to chlorosis. The transplant is done in autumn or spring.

Fertilize during flowering with mineral fertilizer every 15 days.

Escallonia rubra propagates by seed in spring or by cuttings in late summer.
