Care of the shrub Abelia x grandiflora or Glossy Abelia |
The genus Abelia, family Caprifoliaceae, includes 30 species and hybrids of shrubs native to Asia and Mexico. Some species and hybrids are: Abelia x grandiflora, Abelia triflora, Abelia chinensis, Abelia floribunda, Abelia parvifolia. Common name: Glossy Abelia. It's a hybrid between the species Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. They are semi-evergreen shrubs with an elegant bearing and arched branches that reach 1 meter (3.28 feet) in height. The leaves are small and bright green; they turn bronze and purple in autumn. They produce abundant bell-shaped pink or white scented flowers. They can bloom from late spring to early fall. Glossy Abelia is used to form bushy groups, in rockery, as isolated specimens and in pots for patios and terraces. They are ideal for gardens by the sea and for cities due to their resistance to pollution. They attract bees. Abelia x grandiflora prefers full sun exposure but also grows in semi-shade and shade. Frost does not suit them and they can lose their leaves in the cold. Glossy Abelia grows in any type of soil that is well drained. In case of transplantation, it is carried out in spring. Water moderately throughout the year, waiting for the substrate to dry. Slightly increase watering in summer. Fertilize with compost in the fall. Prune lightly after flowering and intensively in late winter if the plant has lost leaves in winter. Abelia x grandiflora is quite resistant plants to the usual pests and diseases. Glossy Abelia is propagated by cuttings in late summer. |
