Care of the shrub Cotoneaster horizontalis or Rockspray cotoneaster |
The genus Cotoneaster, family Rosaceae, includes 50 species of shrubs native to cold and temperate regions of Asia and Europe. Some species are: Cotoneaster horizontalis, Cotoneaster lacteus, Cotoneaster pannosus, Cotoneaster vulgaris, Cotoneaster acuminatus, Cotoneaster congestus, Cotoneaster mycrophyllus, Cotoneaster buxifolius, Cotoneaster wardii, Cotoneaster franchetii. Common names: Rock Cotoneaster, Wall-spray, Rockspray cotoneaster. This species is native to China and Taiwan. They are deciduous shrubs with a creeping bearing whose branches have a structure that looks like the scrape of a fish. The small leaves are semi-evergreen, bright green (sometimes red in autumn) and round in shape. They produce small white or pink star-shaped flowers. They bloom in spring. The showy and long-lasting fruits are red in color and highly decorative. Rock Cotoneaster is used for rockeries, to cover slopes and in pots for terraces and patios. It can behave like climbing plants if planted next to a wall (East or North orientation). Cotoneaster horizontalis is an easy to grow plant that can grow in full sun, shade and semi-shade exposures. It resists the cold well. Wall-spray prefers a light and fertile soil. Water regularly so that the soil is lightly even though they are quite resistant to drought. Rock Cotoneaster does not need pruning or fertilizers. Cotoneaster horizontalis is a quite resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Rockspray cotoneaster propagates by seeds sown in spring or by cuttings in late summer. |
