Care of the plant Cineraria maritima or Silver ragwort |
The genus Cineraria, family Asteraceae, includes 50 species of flowering plants native to southern Africa. Some species are: Cineraria maritima, Cineraria lyratiformis, Cineraria geifolia, Cineraria deltoidea. Common names: Silver ragwort, Dusty miller. This species is native to the Mediterranean region. They are perennial plants that reach 90 cm (2.95 feet) in height. The leaves are alternate, pinnate in narrow lobes and silvery-gray. They bloom in summer with intense yellow flowers grouped in flower heads. Silver ragwort is used in rockeries and borders combined with other Mediterranean plants. It can also be grown in pots for balconies and terraces. It's ideal for Mediterranean coastal gardens. Cineraria maritima needs full sun exposure (it is a heliophilic plant); it can also grow in semi-shade. It resists frost down to -10 ºC (14 ºF). Dusty miller is a very rustic plant that grows in any type of soil; it prefers light and sandy soils. Always water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry. Cineraria maritima resists drought very well. Silver ragwort propagates by seeds sown in spring or by cuttings after flowering. |
