The genus Bergenia, family Saxifragaceae, comprises 8 species of herbaceous plants native to Central Asia. Some species are: Bergenia cordifolia, Bergenia ciliata, Bergenia stracheyi, Bergenia pacumbis. Common names: Bergenia crassifolia, Elephant-ears, Siberian tea, Heartleaf bergenia, Leather bergenia. This species is native to Siberia, Altay and Mongolia. It's currently known as Bergenia crassifolia. They are perennial plants with creeping stems and oval green leaves with reddish tinge at the edges in winter. The flowers are grouped at the end of a peduncle and can be white, pink or red. They bloom in winter and early spring. Bergenia cordifolia needs a semi-shade exposure. It resists frost well Water frequently in spring and summer (never flood); space the irrigations in autumn and winter. The soil can be a garden substrate with abundant organic matter (humus). Planting is done in winter. Fertilize in late winter with a mineral fertilizer. Leather bergenia is a plant very resistant to pests and diseases. Siberian tea propagates by division in late winter, before flowering, or in summer. |
