Care of the plant Antirrhinum majus or Snapdragon |
The genus Antirrhinum, family Plantaginaceae, comprises 20 species of perennial or annual plants native to rocky areas of Europe, the United States, and North Africa. Some species are: Antirrhinum majus, Antirrhinum asarina, Antirrhinum glutinosum, Antirrhinum molle, Antirrhinum hispanicum, Antirrhinum siculum. Common names: Common Snapdragon, Garden Snapdragon, Snapdragon. The leaves are lanceolate or oval, smooth or rough and dark green in color. The attractive flowers, which appear in clusters, are about 5 cm (1.96") long and have a bilabiate tubular shape; They can be white, pink, yellow, red or purple. They bloom in late spring or early summer. Antirrhinum majus need a soil with organic matter, preferably limestone and fertilized with mineral elements before planting. During flowering use mineral fertilizer every 15 days. Common Snapdragon prefers a full sun exposure at high temperatures; It's an ideal plant for gardens with a Mediterranean climate. Water frequently in summer but without watering. The rest of the year you should wait until the soil has dried. Garden Snapdragon can be attacked by mold (especially seeds), rust, and aphids. Snapdragon propagates by division or by seeds sown in the final place or in a seedbed (in August) to obtain early flowering. The ground must be disinfected, since the seeds are easily attacked by fungi. |
