Care of the shrub Yucca gloriosa or Spanish Dagger

The genus Yucca, family Asparagaceae, comprises 50 species of evergreen shrubs native to Mexico, the United States, and the Caribbean. Some species are: Yucca gloriosa, Yucca filifera, Yucca elephantipes, Yucca desmetiana, Yucca carnerosana, Yucca aloifolia, Yucca mixtecana, Yucca rostrata, Yucca schidigera, Yucca thompsoniana, Yucca baccata, Yucca whipplei.

Common names: Spanish bayonet, Spanish Dagger, Palm lily, Glorious yucca, Tree lily. This species is native to the southeastern United States.

They are short-stemmed plants that reach 2 meters (6.56 feet) in height. The bluish-green leaves are arranged in a spiral on the trunk, are linear in shape and measure 50-60 cm. They produce long terminal spikes with large (up to 10 cm/3.93")) white or pink flowers. They bloom in spring and summer.

They are used as isolated specimens, in rockery, in bushy groups and in pots for balconies and terraces. They are ideal for gardens by the sea because they resist salinity.

Glorious Yucca needs full sun exposure and a rather dry and arid climate. It can withstand some sporadic and low intensity frost.

They can grow in sandy and dry soils. Transplantation or planting is done in spring.

Water very moderately, taking into account that they are very resistant to drought (1 watering per week at most).

They do not need fertilizers.

Prune the dry leaves.

They are very resistant plants to the usual pests and diseases.

They propagate from seeds sown in the nursery. Transplant 2 years after germination.
