Care of the indoor plant Pogonatherum paniceum or Miniature Bamboo

The genus Pogonatherum, family Poaceae, comprises 4 species of herbaceous plants native to Asia. The species are: Pogonatherum paniceum, Pogonatherum crinitum, Pogonatherum rufobarbatum, Pogonatherum biaristatum.

Common names: Baby Panda plant, Pygmy Bamboo, Miniature Bamboo. This species is native to Asia.

They are ornamental grasses very similar to bamboos that reach 50 cm (164 feet) in height. They have yellowish-green evergreen leaves, linear in shape and 8 cm (3.14") in length. They do not usually bloom.

Miniature Bamboo is used as indoor plants in well-lit rooms away from heating.

Pogonatherum paniceum needs full or well-lit sun exposure and warm temperatures.

The soil can be a mixture, in equal parts, of leaf mulch and topsoil. The transplant is done at the end of winter.

Water regularly so that the substrate never dries out completely; if Baby Panda plant suffers from drought or low humidity, the leaves turn yellow and may fall. It's important that the ambient humidity; spray the leaves every 2 days in summer and place a tray with wet stones under the pot.

Fertilize every 4 weeks during spring and summer with mineral fertilizer.

Miniature Bamboo does not need pruning. If the plant has lost many leaves, it's advisable to prune drastically at ground level to try to make it regrowth.

Pogonatherum paniceum is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases.

Baby Panda plant are easily propagated by division during the first half of spring.
