Care of the plant Callistephus chinensis or China aster |
The genus Callistephus, family Asteraceae, includes a single species of annual plant native to Korea and China. Common names: China aster, Annual aster. They are herbaceous plants that reach 80 cm (2.62 feet) in height. The leaves are intense green, alternate, with a serrated edge and hairy. The flowers appear in chapters at the end of the stems and resemble daisies. They bloom in summer and fall; they can be very colorful (there are many cultivars). China aster is used in pots for balconies, terraces and windows or to form flower beds and borders. It is advisable to plant them next to walls or shrubs that protect them from the wind. Callistephus chinensis can grow in full sun and semi-shade exposures. Annual aster prefers a soil with compost or manure. Fertilize every 20 days with mineral fertilizer during flowering. Water moderately throughout the year waiting for the soil to dry out; increase watering slightly during the summer. The main danger for Callistephus chinensis is the Fusariosis (produced by fungi); monitor excess watering. China aster propagates by seeds sown in winter in glass beds. |
