Care of the indoor plant Zamioculcas zamiifolia or ZZ plant |
The only species included in the genus Zamioculcas, family Araceae, is native to East Africa: Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Common names: ZZ plant, Zuzu plant, Zanzibar gem, Eternity plant, Emerald palm. They are very interesting slow-growing tropical plants for their foliage. The leaves are 60 cm (1.96 feet) long and have shiny, lanceolate, leathery leaflets. In pots they do not usually bloom. ZZ plant is used as indoor and greenhouse plants. It can live 5 years, then it is convenient to renew the plant. Zamioculcas zamiifolia needs a light exposure but without direct sun and average temperatures between 22-10 ºC (71-50 ºF). The soil can be a mixture, in equal parts, of peat, heather soil, and leaf mulch. Transplant every 2 years to a pot of a slightly larger size. Water with lime-free water waiting for the surface of the substrate to dry. Indoors with heating, the plant should be sprayed twice a week with lime-free water. Fertilize monthly with mineral houseplant fertilizer during spring and summer. Zuzu plant can be attacked by mealybugs if the humidity is low or by fungi if there is excess humidity in the roots. Propagation by division or by cuttings is not easy; it's advisable to acquire the specimens in garden centers, nurseries or in plant stores. |
