The genus Saccharum, family Poaceae, comprises 12 species of herbaceous plants, annuals and perennials, native to tropical and subtropical regions of both Hemispheres. Some species are: Saccharum officinarum, Saccharum robustum, Saccharum sinense, Saccharum bengalense. Common names: Purple Sugar Cane, Sugarcane. This species is native to New Guinea. They are perennial herbaceous plants that reach 5 meters (16.4 feet) in height. The leaves have parallel veins and a tapered shape. The flowers appear in panicles at the upper end of the plant and are formed by small hairy spikes that are in turn made up of 2 flowers. Sugarcane is used to decorate pond banks and to form groups in the garden. Saccharum officinarum needs full sun exposure. It's a tropical plant that does not resist the cold. The soil can be a normal garden soil. Water abundantly but without flooding so that the soil is always slightly damp. Fertilize once a month during spring and summer with mineral fertilizer. Saccharum officinarum is a quite resistant plant to the most common pests and diseases. Purple Sugar Cane is propagated from stem cuttings that have at least one bud and one node or from suckers that it produces at the base. |
