Care of the plant Pelargonium magenteum or Magenta-Flower Pelargonium |
The genus Pelargonium, family Geraniaceae, includes 200 species of herbaceous plants, succulents and shrubs native to southern Africa. Some species are: Pelargonium magenteum, Pelargonium zonale, Pelargonium tetragonum, Pelargonium radens, Pelargonium quercifolium, Pelargonium peltatum, Pelargonium odoratissimum, Pelargonium graveolens, Pelargonium grandiflorum, Pelargonium exstipulatum, Pelargonium cucullatum, Pelargonium crispum, Pelargonium capitatum. Common names: Purple Pelargonium, Magenta Storksbill, Purple Storksbill, Magic Storksbill, Magenta-Flower Pelargonium. Pelargonium magenteum is a deciduous subshrub (it loses its leaves in summer) that reaches 1.5 metres (4.92 feet) in height. The hairy leaves are greyish green and heart-shaped or rounded. The attractive and showy flowers can be magenta or mauve with dark spots in the centre of the petals. It blooms in late winter and early spring. Magenta-Flower Pelargonium is used in rockeries, borders and, more commonly, in pots for patios, balconies and terraces. Pelargonium magenteum needs semi-shade exposure, avoiding direct sunlight during the hottest time of the day, especially in Mediterranean climates. In summer it remains dormant and prefers not to receive much sun. The soil can be normal garden soil with 20% coarse sand and a little peat. The pot is transplanted at the end of winter. Water regularly with lime-free water, waiting for the surface of the substrate to dry. Purple Pelargonium does not tolerate prolonged drought or excess humidity. Fertilize in early spring with a mineral fertilizer rich in phosphorus. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dry branches and maintain a compact appearance. Pelargonium magenteum is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excess humidity in the roots and in the environment. Magenta-Flower Pelargonium is propagated by cuttings taken in spring or summer and from seeds sown in autumn or spring. |
