Care of the plant Paeonia cambessedesii or Balearic peony |
The genus Paeonia, family Paeoniaceae, includes about 40 species of perennial herbaceous plants native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Some species are: Paeonia cambessedesii, Paeonia suffruticosa, Paeonia tenuifolia, Paeonia anomala, Paeonia officinalis, Paeonia rockii, Paeonia brownii. Common names: Balearic peony, Majorcan peony. This species is native to the Balearic Islands, Spain. They are herbaceous plants with an underground stem that reach 30 cm (11.8") in height. The attractive leaves, glossy dark green on the upper side and maroon on the underside, sprout in winter and dry in summer. The large, showy flowers can be pink or purple. They bloom in spring. Balearic peony is used in rockeries, in clear undergrowths, next to walls and in pots and planters. Paeonia cambessedesii grows in full sun and semi-shade exposures; needs a warm climate. It resists occasional frosts. Majorcan peony prefers deep, calcareous and well-drained soils. Water moderately, waiting until the substrate has completely dried; Paeonia cambessedesii is a sensitive plant to excess humidity. Balearic peony does not need fertilizers. Prune the dry leaves when the plant withers; they will sprout again in winter. Paeonia cambessedesii is a quite resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Majorcan peony is propagated from seed sown in early spring, but new plants can take 4 years to flower. |
