The genus Farfugium, family Asteraceae, includes 2 species of herbaceous plants native to Asia: Farfugium japonicum and Farfugium hiberniflorum. Common names: Leopard plant, Green leopard plant, Tractor seat plant. This species is native to Japan, Korea, and China. They are herbaceous rhizomatous plants with tussock bearing that reach 60 cm (1.96 feet) in height and width. The leaves are large, kidney-shaped or rounded, and bright green; sometimes they have yellowish spots. The flowers are yellow in color, are grouped in inflorescences and resemble daisies. They bloom in summer. Leopard plant is used on borders, on rockeries, on slopes, in undergrowths and in pots for terraces and patios. Farfugium japonicum grows in full sun, semi-shade and shade exposures. The ideal annual average temperature is 15-25 ºC (59-77 ºF). It does not resist frost. The soil can be a normal garden soil with 20% organic matter. In case of transplantation, it is better to do it in autumn or spring. Water frequently in spring and summer so that the substrate is always moist; slightly reduce watering the rest of the year. Green leopard plant does not resist drought. Fertilize in autumn with manure or compost and in summer every 15 days with mineral fertilizer. Farfugium japonicum is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases. Tractor seat plant is propagated by division and by seeds sown in spring. |
