Care of the plant Gaillardia x grandiflora or Blanket Flower |
The genus Gaillardia, family Asteraceae, includes 22 species of herbaceous plants native to North America and Argentina. Some species are: Gaillardia pulchella, Gaillardia arizonica, Gaillardia aristata, Gaillardia pinnatifida, Gaillardia pulchella. Common names: Gaillardia hybrid, Blanket Flower. It's a hybrid between the Gaillardia aristata and Gaillardia pulchella species. They are herbaceous plants of tussock bearing with erect stems that reach 50 cm (19.68") in height. The lobed leaves are rough, dark green and oblong-lanceolate in shape. The showy flowers are large (up to 10 cm/3.93" in diameter) and orange, yellow or multi-colored. They bloom in late spring and summer. Gaillardia hybrid is used in borders, in flowerbeds, in pots for patios, balconies and terraces and as cut flowers. Gaillardia x grandiflora needs full sun exposure and protected from the wind. It resists occasional frosts if it's protected with plastics. The soil should be light, well drained with coarse sand, and contain some manure or compost. Water regularly so that the substrate does not dry out completely (never water). Prune the stems from the base in fall. Blanket Flower is a sensitive plant to excess humidity and are sometimes attacked by insects. Gaillardia hybrid is propagated from seeds sown in spring in the nursery. |
