Care of the bulbous plant Hyacinthus orientalis or Common hyacinth

The genus Hyacinthus, family Asparagaceae, includes 3 species of plants native to the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East. The species are: Hyacinthus orientalis, Hyacinthus transcaspicus, Hyacinthus litwinowii. There are more than 2,000 varieties.

Common names: Common hyacinth, Garden hyacinth, Dutch hyacinth. This species is native to the Eastern Mediterranean.

They are bulbous plants that reach 30 cm (11.8") in height. The leaves are broad, linear and are grouped from the base. The highly perfumed flowers are small, flared and appear in spikes of various colors: violet, yellow, blue, white, strawberry, etc. They bloom in early spring.

The soil can be a garden substrate with coarse sand and peat.

They are used to form clumps of bulbous plants combined with plants that have different flowering times. They are also used as indoor plants in special glass containers with water instead of soil. Protect them from drafts.

Water regularly to keep the substrate moist.

They do not need fertilizers.

The bulbs are planted in the garden in the fall and bloom in the spring. When the flowers and leaves die, the bulbs are removed, washed, and stored in a dry place to be planted again the following year. They are planted leaving one centimeter of the surface protruding.

They propagate by seeds, but it's better to buy bulbs from a reputable establishment.
