Care of the succulent plant Aeonium hierrense or Sempervivum hierrense |
The genus Aeonium, of the Crassulaceae family, includes 75 species of succulent plants native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, East Africa and Morocco. Some species are: Aeonium hierrense, Aeonium virgineum, Aeonium undulatum, Aeonium spathulatum, Aeonium mascaense, Aeonium canariense, Aeonium arboreum, Aeonium glutinosum, Aeonium percarneum, Aeonium tabulaeforme, Aeonium simsii. Aeonium hierrense is a succulent plant with an unbranched shrub habit that reaches 1 meter (3.28 feet) in height. At the end of the stem appear rosettes up to 40 cm (15.74") in diameter with fleshy spatulate leaves of light green color with reddish margins. The small star-shaped flowers, white and pink, appear in large pyramidal inflorescences up to 50 cm in length. It blooms during spring. Sempervivum hierrense is used in rockeries, in cactus and succulent gardens and in pots for patios and terraces. It is ideal for Mediterranean coastal gardens. Aeonium hierrense grows well in full sun and light shade exposures (avoiding the central hours of the day in Mediterranean climates). It does not resist frost. The soil can be a commercial substrate for cacti and succulents or a normal well-drained garden soil with coarse sand or gravel. Always water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry completely. Reduce watering in winter. Fertilize once in spring and once in summer with mineral fertilizer for cacti and succulent plants. Prune wilted inflorescences. Aeonium hierrense is a plant that is quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to cold and excess humidity. Sempervivum hierrense is propagated from seeds sown in spring and by cuttings. |
