Care of the shrub Cotinus coggygria or Smoke tree |
The genus Cotinus, family Anacardiaceae, comprises 2 species of shrubs native to the southeastern United States and the Mediterranean region: Cotinus americanus and Cotinus coggygria. Common names: European smoketree, Smoke tree, Smoke bush, Venetian sumach. This species is native to southern Europe. They are highly branched deciduous shrubs that reach 5 meters (16.4 feet) in height. The leaves turn red in autumn and are alternate, rounded or ovate. The flowers appear in branched inflorescences in the shape of a pyramid. The fruits are covered with feather-like hairs. Smoke tree is used in the garden as isolated specimens or in bushy groups. Cotinus coggygria needs full sun or semi-shade exposure and mild temperatures; it's an ideal plant for regions with a Mediterranean climate. European smoketree is a very rustic species that grow in any type of well-drained soil; overwatering kills the plant. Planting is done at the end of winter. Water moderately throughout the year waiting for the substrate to be dry. Venetian sumach does not need pruning. Fertilize in autumn with manure or compost. Cotinus coggygria can be attacked by fungi if there is excess watering. Smoke bush propagates by seeds, cuttings or layering in spring. |
