Care of the succulent plant Beschorneria yuccoides or Mexican Lily |
The genus Beschorneria, family Asparagaceae, comprises 10 species of succulent plants native to Mexico. Some species are: Beschorneria yuccoides, Beschorneria albiflora, Beschorneria rigida, Beschorneria tubiflora. Common names: Mexican Lily, Yucca-leaved beschorneria. This species is native to Mexico. They are succulent plants with a rounded shape. They have soft, sword-shaped leaves (up to 50 cm/1.64 feet in length) and bluish-gray in color. The spectacular floral scape reaches 2 meters (6.56 feet) in height and is red in color. They bloom in spring. Mexican Lily is used in rockeries or in gardens of succulent plants combined with Agaves, Aloes and Cactus. Beschorneria yuccoides needs full sun exposure and protected from the wind; it resists cold and light frosts if the soil is dry. The soil can be a mixture of 1/3 sand and 2/3 garden substrate. Water moderately, waiting for the soil to dry completely. In summer slightly increase the waterings. Yucca-leaved beschorneria does not need pruning or fertilization. Overwatering causes the roots to rot. Mexican Lily propagates by seeds, stem cuttings or by division. |
