The genus Begonia, family Begoniaceae, comprises 1,500 species and 10,000 cultivars of plants native to subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, America and Africa. Some species are: Begonia semperflorens, Begonia rex, Begonia grandis, Begonia elatior, Begonia corallina, Begonia boliviensis, Begonia x tuberhybrida, Begonia nelumbiifolia, Begonia heracleifolia.

Common name: Wax Begonia, Bedding Begonia, Wax Leaf Begonia. This species is native to Southeastern United States.

They are herbaceous plants with rounded leaves of bright green color. They produce abundant small flowers of white, red, pink, orange, etc (depending on the cultivar); they can bloom for most of the year.

Begonia semperflorens prefers a semi-shade exposure but can grow in full sun. You need a warm and humid climate; They must be protected from drafts and cold.

Water regularly to keep the soil moist; it's advisable not to wet the leaves.

Fertilize with liquid mineral fertilizer every 15 days in spring and summer.

An ideal soil is a mixture of garden substrate with manure or compost.
