The genus Aubrieta, family Brassicaceae, comprises 20 species of perennial plants native to Eurasia. Some species are: Aubrieta deltoidea, Aubrieta hybrida, Aubrieta libanotica, Aubrieta columnae. Common names: Purple rock cress, Rainbow rock cress. This species is native southern Europe east to central Asia. They are low-growing perennial herbaceous plants that reach 20 cm (7.87") in height. The leaves are small, silvery gray in color and oval. The flowers form terminal clusters and can be blue, purple, or purple. They bloom in spring. Purple rock cress is a very rustic plant that adapt to all types of soil: sandy, alkaline or stony. It prefers a well-fertilized soil with coarse siliceous sand. Aubrieta is grown in direct sun exposure but prefers half shade. Water regularly but with little water. Rainbow rock cress resists drought not too long. Fertilize with compost or manure in late winter and every 15 days in spring with mineral fertilizer. Aubrieta can be attacked by caterpillars that devour leaves. Rainbow rock cress propagates by division, by stem cuttings or by seeds. |
