Adiantum is a genus of about 250 species of ferns in the family Pteridaceae. Some species are: Adiantum capillus-veneris, Adiantum lunulatum, Adiantum pedatum, Adiantum macrophyllum, Adiantum raddianum, Adiantum tractum, Adiantum cuneatum, Adiantum farleyense. Common names: Maidenhair fern, Venus hair fern, Black maidenhair fern, Southern maidenhair fern. They are ferns with black stems and bright green leaves, kidney shaped and lobed at the tip. It is a small and delicate plant. Maidenhair fern is used as a houseplant and to decorate fountains. It has medicinal properties to treat respiratory conditions. Adiantum capillus-veneris needs an illuminated exposure but without direct sun and can tolerate cold but not frost. The soil for these plants should be composed of a mixture of 2/3 of garden substrate and 1/3 of peat. If they are grown in a fountain, it is not necessary to water them, but if they are grown indoors, they should be watered every 2 days with water without lime. Fertilize every 2 months with organic powder or liquid fertilizer. Adiantum capillus-veneris is a plant prone to attack by mites. Venus hair fern can be propagated at the end of winter by division. |
