Care of the tree Abies pinsapo or Spanish fir |
The genus Abies, Pinaceae family, includes about 50 species of trees natives of Europe, Asia and North America. Some species are: Abies pinsapo, Abies alba, Abies grandis, Abies sibirica, Abies spectabilis, Abies cilicica, Abies amabilis. Common name: Spanish fir. This specie is native to southern Spain. It's a pyramid-shaped conifer that reaches 82 ft (25 m) high. The branches are horizontal, hanging slightly at the tip. The leaves are rigid and sharp needles and appear on the branches giving a cylindrical appearance to the set. Its male flowers are first green in color, then turn purple and finally brown. The pinecones are about 6" (15 cm) long, are cylindrical and vertical. Used in gardens for its beautiful size and also for afforestation. Spanish fir needs a shadow or semi-shade exposure. Abies pinsapo can be grown in any type of soil but prefers limestone. Spanish fir does not needs many irrigations because it is a Mediterranean species that needs less water than other Abies. These trees do not need pruning or special fertilizers. Abies pinsapo is not usually attacked by common pests and diseases. You can propagate these trees from seeds or by cuttings. |
