Care of the shrub Elaeagnus x reflexa or Elaeagnus hybrid

The genus Elaeagnus, family Elaeagnaceae, comprises 100 species of shrubs and trees native to Asia. Some species and hybrids are: Elaeagnus x reflexa (hybrid), Elaeagnus x ebbingei (hybrid), Elaeagnus pungens, Elaeagnus angustifolia, Elaeagnus oxycarpa, Elaeagnus glabra, Elaeagnus commutata.

Common name: Elaeagnus hybrid. This plant is a hybrid between Elaeagnus pugens and Elaeagnus glabra.

They are evergreen shrubs that reach 5 meters (16.4 feet) in height. The decorative leathery leaves have a slightly wavy edge, elliptical shape and deep green color. They produce small, very aromatic white flowers. They bloom in autumn. The fruits are quite decorative.

They are used to form hedges, bushy groups and as isolated specimens. They are ideal for coastal gardens; they resist salinity well.

Elaeagnus x reflexa can be grown in full sun, semi-shade or shade exposures. They resist frost and cold.

The soil can be a mixture of 1/2 garden substrate, 1/4 leaf mulch, and 1/4 coarse siliceous sand. Planting is done in spring or autumn.

They resist drought well; wait for the soil to dry before watering. Never water because the roots can rot.

Fertilize in spring with manure or compost.

Prune in late spring to control growth and keep it compact.

They are quite resistant plants to pests and diseases.

They propagate by cuttings in summer.
